The French Pyrenees

The French Pyrenees We had crossed through from France into Spain and saw a small part of the Pyrenees, enough to make us want to explore more, so here we are on Monday evening sat approx 1000m above sea level looking up at huge mountains, oh did I mention that 250km into the journey I realised I had not got my passport back from checking into the campsite at Villafranca? Panic over as Tracey had been given it along with the usual site information, well that saved a few hours backtracking!

Anyway back into France and where were the hills, well mountains really? The road to our chosen destination was fast and smooth and then we turned off and started up, and up! I would have posted video of the stunning route we took but as is usual the tech failed, the dash camera froze again, but at least now I know why.

We had aimed to stay at an Aire in the town of Cauterets but as is the norm, it was rammed so we opted to look at one of the many campsites we had passed on the way. We chose a small private site of about 70 pitches, there were only two spaces available and we were given free reign to choose which we wanted. We chose well and here’s the pitch looking out onto the river with mountains all around, bliss!

Tomorrow brings more adventures, there is a cable car and a ski lift to take us up another 2000m or so! we will see!

We set of after breakfast to find the cable car we had see from the campsite, it sits in a prominent position high above the town and looked as if it would provide stunning views of the valley below.

Well it might if it were open, it was closed for maintenance no doubt preparing for the coming snow later in the year!

Not to be defeated we set off in Iron Cat to find another route higher into the Pyrenees, not too far out of town we found it, one cable car and a ski lift were on offer and the promise of views to die for, providing we don’t fall off the ski lift or it might be to die for the view!
